PET FISH FARM

Colourful and exotic fish have become a favourite  domestic pet with city-dwellers, and this has introduced a new vocation to some local communities. For some years now, the people of the Bueng Tanode-pattana area have been breed?ing fish in the traditional way in krachang - large bamboo cages left in the fish's natural habitat, the waterways, which they keep clean for breeding.

Today, every family has 30-40 krachang, some even, more, with 300-400 fish raised in each. The fish bred in these containers are hardy, easy to care for, and possess all the characteristics of colour, shape and movement which make them a big attraction. There are five kinds of fish bred here, the most popular being the sword-tail or pla sod.
Dealers buy direct from the farm every week, or else fish may be taken to Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak market by a local agent or by the farmer himself.
Today, the colourful fish of Thailand are a source of pleasure and relaxation in homes throughout the world, making them a valuable export.
Breeding fish not only provides additional income to the households, but is also a source of enjoyment and relaxation for villagers. They have discovered the value of taking good care of the water resources on which they depend, and this in turn has  increased the number of other aquatic animals they can raise.
